January 2010 Tournament Report

Following two months of dismal surf conditions and a 2009 where we forced to cancel more Sundays than we would do in three normal years, Mike Griggs came up with the idea that we should bring the date for January forward by a week so as to have two bites at the January cherry if the need should arise. Well it turned out to be a stroke of genius and Curly provided us with a totally respectable three to four foot north easterly swell – a little gnarly but semi smooth and minimal wind. By eight o’clock the beach was a buzz with us, the Curly Nippers and a good splattering of coffee imbibing public who had turned up to enjoy the day.

The Juniors started us off as usual and Josh, Connor and Nicki braved the challenging conditions. Josh surfed up a storm and landed about seven waves to outpoint Connor and take the first round. The Seniors hit the waves which were now consistently four feet and giving up some fine rights. Steve B rode a couple to the sand and showed us his tenacious style particularly in the shore break reforms, Alex surfing the best he has since joining the Club took second place from Simon I and Mike B who both worked hard to close the gap. Heat three was dominated by Sean D and Simon C both showing their back of the board approaches. Good to see Ed C back in the ranks and performing really well to take third. The third heat saw Rob C land his usual outside bombs to eclipse Tom, who is regaining form after a his footy trip to the UK in 2009, and Phil N.

The second round followed a gathering around the BBQ with bacon and egg rolls washed down with a couple of softies. The Juniors again led the way with the now slightly larger conditions confining their efforts to the shories. Connor turned the tables on Josh by landing some nice reforms laced with nice cutbacks, Nicki paddled furiously against the whitewater and was a credit to herself and Club in enduring the challenging break.

The thirds got off to a momentous start with Chook catching a monster and surfed just in the critical section nearly all the way to the beach whilst Ed C manoeuvred some clever climb and drops on the now clean right handers. Phil C and Mike B weren’t far behind with both catching some impressive rides. The seconds were treated with less waves as they had to contend with a couple of lulls but Griggsy came to the fore with some long left handers to take the money from Alex who again showed his quality form –It was one of those heats where patience proved to be the winning formula. Sean hit the lip consistently to make the best of the conditions and landed a some nose rides on the reforms. Rob C on the other hand stuck to his formula of lurking out the back and tailing his board on some nicely formed right handers. Simon C executed some radical cutbacks to take third whilst Tom concentrated on the walking and trimming approach to take out the minor placing's. Overall we were stoked to get a day in with some quality yet demanding surf mixed with pleasant weather and great camaraderie .

We have decided to hold the Presentation Function at Dee Why RSL Cub on May the 1st and look forward to seeing you and your friends and partners there. Sean and Simon C are working on the new logo and it should be finalized soon. Look forward to Rob Coriel taking over the catering this year and providing us with some gastronomical delights at our monthly comps.

Many thanks to Phil Callum who has worked hard on the Club trailer and has had it registered. Thanks also to Dee Why RSL who provided the funds to make the appropriate repairs and upgrades to the trailer. Remember to patronize DYRSL as they have been a great supporter of us over the years.
Will see you all at the next comp and let’s hope that 2010 is kinder to us in providing better surfing conditions than we have had recently.

All the Best for 2010 – Phil Nicol

October 2009 - Tournament Report

The surf was about one to two foot when we arrived and the consistency was extremely poor, so poor in fact that the decision was made to postpone the event until the following week. As we watched the a pod of porpoise languish on the almost glass water the waves started to break to the point that the decision was reversed and we decided to have a go, based as much on the fact, that the tide was dropping and there was possibly a couple of reasonable hours ahead.

The fourteen that hung around were treated to completely adequate waves until the last heat when, again the consistency dried up . The first heat saw Sean rewarded for his patience and he caught two of the best waves of the day to outscore the ever consistent Phil C and Iswah. The conditions really kicked up for the second heat and whilst waiting for time to start Rob Coriel landed without doubt the best wave of the day and head dipped through a small cover up section – unfortunately time wasn’t on his side. Lex handled the somewhat fullish conditions the best to take out the heat from Alex M who again showed his continued improvement to take out second place. Rob C didn’t sustain the luck of his earlier ride to take out third. The waves almost at that point turned off and the last heat had to really scrounge to get anything worthwhile. The luckiest of the bunch was Phil N who landed a couple of outside lines to narrowly outclipse Mike G and Connor B.

Welcome back to Tom Leach who just returned from a rugby tour of the UK and turned up to contest the day.

We made the decision to abandon the rest of the comp because of the deteriorating conditions and the influx of Nippers from North Curl Curl SLSC. Happy we were to get some action in after the abandonment of the September Comp.

North Curly came fifth in the recent Five Ways which was held two weeks ago at Freshwater in six to eight foot conditions that really tested ones mettle. Some notable performances were registered with both Sean and Lex scoring wins and Mike G and Robbie C grabbing seconds. Our lack of depth proved costly and we will have to work on this in the coming year.
With the job ahead of us for the coming year fresh in our minds we sat down and had an in depth chinwag about the future of the Club and the need to revamp a few of the things we are doing at the moment. The change of the name and format of the Logjam, the Club logo, a new indicator system for the comps, marketing proposals and the Christmas Party were all canvassed. No decisions were made but we all agreed that the need for cultural change was in the air and we would have some new approaches and concepts in place by the holding of the New Logjam which will be again held on the Sunday of the Long Weekend in January. We invite all concerned to contact Saun or myself if you have any ideas as to out revamp. We will hold a dedicated meeting to this end within the next few weeks.

Remember that we have the November comp this month a we would like to see a big roll out to finish off the year. We will have a Chrismas get together in December along the lines of previos years and remind all the the presentation will be held in May 2010.

See you all in November and would appreciate some feedback re the direction of the Club – Keep on surfing, Phil Nicol

International Supporter Turns 13

A very happy 13th birthday to Chris, one of our international supporters. Have a good one mate and if you ever make it to Australia, you are welcome to surf with us anytime. Our resident juniors, Leftie and Ishwan, need to be given a lesson in surfing from a master such as yourself.

Tournament Report - August 2009

Well the morning welcomed us with 50 mph westerlies and North Curly was barely breaking where we normally hold the monthly comp. The decision was made to relocate down the beach between the second and third walkway where there seemed to be a two foot break and some protection from the wind. We literally “dug in “ the tent and began proceedings in rather challenging conditions. Twenty people turned up on the day and two rounds of heats and finals were completed. Simon C, having recovered from his head injury at a previous comp showed some nice of the lip skills to take the first heat from the ever improving Stu C and the consistent Phil C. The next heat provided a win for Lex, who continues to impress with his stylish approach, and out pointed Troy who scored his best result with the Club to date. Chook really impressed with his feet reverses and rides all the way to the beach. Good to see Mike A who was down from QLD having surf with us. The third heat was held in the now improving conditions and Robbie C, just back from a working holiday at Norfolk Island proved too good for Mike G, who was also returning from a long holiday in the UK. Both boys showed the benefits of their rest away.

The juniors saw Josh pip Luca and Connor for the honours.
The second round was pretty impressive by all standards as the westerly abated and the surf began to offer up some clean lines – indeed it was a classic winters day with 17 degree water temp and the sun high in the sky. The thirds took to the water and Marty K mastered the left handers on offer to eclipse our new member, Alex Mckenzie, who did well to outpoint Steve B who was coming to terms with his new board. The seconds saw Phil N win the Blackwood Road shootout by pipping Stu C with lifelong North Curly resident and local historian, Mark Taylor, taking third. The crowd was aghast at the headstand executed by Phil C and his mastering of the inverted position. The firsts was the proverbial battle royale between Simon C and Robbie with the latter migrating to the north of the beach to grab a couple of superior waves to take the day. Both of these back of the board surfers utilized the conditions well to nudge out Lex who took third.

The Juniors saw Connor turn the tables by catching a couple of nice rights in the now fullish conditions to win.

Remember that the Five Ways is on the 11th of October and we will need everyone on deck to compete at Freshy on that day. Bring friends and rellies to boost us along. We will finalise the details at our September meet. Cost will be $25 so get this to Stu asap.

Congratulations to Club President, Saun Dry who two weeks ago placed second in the over 35’s at the Australian Tiles – Well done big fella we are all extremely proud of your achievements.

Keep in mind our major sponsor Dee Why RSL and patronize the Club whenever you can.

See you all in September and take advantage of the Springtime surf. Phil Nicol

Tournament Report - April 2009

What a disappointment as we drove into the Curly car park expecting six to eight foot heaving sets peaking at “our” competition break. The day before, Anzac Day, was regarded as one of the best surfs around ever and we automatically assumed there would be some leftovers for us on the Sunday. Surfers poured in ready to take advantage of the exceptional conditions and one could see the palpable scour on their faces as over pumped expectations were deflated. Huey conspired to push the swell down to two feet and the high tide added to the lack of consistency and fullness on the day. Nonetheless the non realization of our optimism was tempered by blue skies, a soft offshore wind and a surf that by normal criteria was quite adequate.

The juniors took to the water and Luca launched into a couple of outside breaks to edge out Josh and Nicki . Lex outgunned Mike G in a close contest in the first of the Seniors whilst Saun and Rob C beat Simon C and Phil in the remaining two heats.
The second round was challenging as the swell became less consistent and a strong westerly made it difficult to paddle into the diminishing sets.

The tables turned in the Juniors with Josh now finding his form to push Nicki and Luca into the minor placings. These guys handled the conditions well. The thirds saw the revival of “Doc” Irvine who head dipped a couple of inside breaks to nudge out the fast finishing Chook and the ever improving Mary K. The seconds was predominated by Simon C who scored the two highest waves of the day to outpoint Phil N and Phil C. The swell by this time was extremely irregular with the fullness and westerly proving hard times.
The firsts were given a revised format and each surfer was allowed only three attempted waves. Again Saun came to the fore and caught two right handers on which he landed a some nice re entries. Mike G surfed consistently displaying a solid approach that could have seen him take the final if he had surfed out his last wave. Mike is one of the big improvers this year. Lex came in third having been hampered by a couple of close outs whilst Robbi C, who couldn’t quite get the right waves, came next.

A great day in spite of the conditions. Welcome to our two new members Troy Moorehouse and Phil Callum both of whom surfed great on the day and before long will be giving all a run for their money.

Thanks again to Griggsy for the catering. Note the Bennett Surfboards are offering our Club a special on custom boards next month so pop down and talk to Andrew. Remember to support Dee Why RSL who is one of our major sponsors and Dripping Wet who likewise always come to the party.

Plenty of comps coming up over the next two months – good luck to all involved.

Tournament Report - March 2009

An excellent day greeted us as we congregated at 7:30 to setup for the day’s activities. The temperature was on the way to 25 degrees and a two foot plus swell from the North East was delivering some fine right and left handers. The wind was mild offshore. The conditions were fullish and continued to be so as the tide headed towards high at 11 am. Great to see some old faces come back for the day – Gavin competed and showed he has lost nothing as did Matt Maris who impressed us all with his fine walking ,drop knee turns and intelligent wave selection. Great to see Nicki and Sean L back in the ranks.

We had twenty surfers on the day and got through the full two rounds without much drama. The first round saw Sean, Tom, Simon C and Marty take the honors. Well done Marty who landed his first top place since joining the Club – perseverance pays. The only drawback of the day was the many heads in the water – We had to compete for waves against the general free surfers and a Grommie contest that was using the same area. Hopefully as the water and conditions cool we will get a better go at the area.

The second round was a carbon copy of the first but possibly a little less consistent due to the higher tide.
Sean grabbed some fine backhanders and again displayed patience to score the two highest waves on the day to predominate the Firsts. There was a battle plus for second with Simon C just taking out Tom by 0.1 point . Seconds saw Matty M land some top right handers to eclipse Mike Baird who caught a couple of bombs to come in second. Mike’s two seconds for the day has been his best result to date. The Thirds was dominated by “Doc” who worked the inside break with aplomb to outpoint Mike G and Bobby L .Gavin also worked the shories to take out the Fourths ahead of Sean L and Bruce H.

Good to see the members flowing back and next month should be a ripper with the return of the extra half dozen or so now in the Mentowis and overseas on business. Thanks to Mike Griggs for the catering and preparation of the judging sheets and competition information.

I have just applied for our 2009 – 2010 grant from Dee Why RSL so I think that we should continue our patronage there and encourage new members to join. Dee Why Club has been a consistent supporter of us over the years.

Look forward to seeing you in April – Phil Nicol

Tournament Report - February 2009

Sorry about the late report but life has been demanding. We had a pretty reasonable day with the surf three footish and some surfable outside breaks that were difficult to ride all the way in. The number of competitors were down as many later woke up to the fact that the comp was early this month due to the falling of the dates. At least six people got in contact later and apologized.

The first round saw Tom, Sean and Mike take the honors in closely contested heats. The surf held up pretty well for the second round and the usual suspects plied their wares to take out the respective finals. Sean ripped some fine left handers and Lex impressed with his usual class act. Simon nudged out Phil in the seconds whilst Steve B returned to form to win from Rob Kneller a new member that signed up on the day, Welcome to the Club Rob.

The day before we hosted the Regionals and Sean, Mike, Tom, Phil, Simon, Steve and Lex all made it to the State Titles to be held in June.

We are having a membership drive at our next comp in March and everybody is asked to bring a friend.

Remember this year we have a limited edition Club towel as the membership gift.
Look forward to seeing you 29th of March – Keep surfin’ – Phil Nicol

Cloudy Skies Brighten 2009 LOGJAM

It was with some degree of apprehension that this years Logjam was scheduled for the Australia Day Weekend – School holidays and a host of conflicting activities could have decimated the ranks of competitors and supporters. Luckily the right combination of factors conspired to give us a great day of competition. Organizers were looking to move the venue further down the beach until a strong southerly change came through on the Saturday night and pumped up the swell to three to four feet. For the first time in a month the Curly banks provided would be considered as contestable waves. The overcast skies also kept the free surfers to a minimum so we had a pretty good run of the contest area to complete the day.
The waves were fullish right though the tides and it took surfing nouse to consistently catch waves that afforded the chance to score well. The usual suspects impressed the judges in the first round with Paul O’Grady, Matt Flemming, Sean Dry, Lex Evans, Wayne Maloney , Simon Cox and Rob Coriel showed their prowess on the Old “Logs”.

These boards from the sixties demand a different approach and skill set as they are much heavier and harder to work than the modern mal but the above crew made it look easy as they climbed and dropped, cutback, walked, noserode and rentered the tasty waves on offer. There was always a considerable gallery all through the day that enjoyed the onwater displays.Bad luck to Mike Baird who missed the final by a slither after catching a winning wave just after the bell and Mike Griggs who missed out on a countback.

The highlight of the day, as usual, was the toothpick event where the competitors ride twelve foot plus hollow wooden boards that turn surfing into a rodeo. These logs are extremely difficult to tame and have a mind of their own. A gallery of onlookers hoo’d and ha’d all through the thirty minute event as the numerous stacks and bombed takeoffs littered the lines. Sean caught two bombs from outside and rode them through to the beach to outpoint the Flemmo who has proved to be the master of this discipline in the past. The spectacular stacks by Gus and Bobby kept us all on our toes and provided us with excellent entertainment – Well done lads!

The finals got under way and the conditions for the Mystery were pretty variable and the boys and girls found it challenging to land potential scoring waves. Grub showed real surf experience and caught some whitewater that reformed into a nice inside wall, Bobby and Cranchie both landed respectable outsiders to score well. Our two juniors Ali and Luca surfed great on these heavy boards to get trophies.

The Final was a closely event with the crème de la crème going head on in the now very surfable conditions. The perseverance of Flemmo stood out as did the aggression of Sean and the Stylish turns of Lex. Some great walking by Wayne and trimming by Simon kept the crowd focused on every instant of the thirty minute heat. The patience of Paul O’Grady, who sat for ten minutes at one stage without catching a wave, paid off as he landed some excellent rides to the beach and in doing so gave him the opportunity to showcase his stylish turns and roundouts combined with timely walking and nose rides – the champ picked himself.

Many thanks to all the people that made our annual signature event the success that it was. Special mention has to be made to Mike Griggs and Simon Cox who handled the operational aspects of the meet, Mike and Clare who again excelled themselves with the catering and logistics, Grub who bought down the flags and equipment from Freshie, Sean for his organization capacity and sound decision making. Everyone was blown away by the trophies that Steve Blackmore handmade for the Event – Great work Steve the quality and creation was outstanding! Well done also to Rachael and her friend Ellie who ran the raffle – Rachael is the best raffle marketer on the Northern Beaches.

We appreciate the entrants from the other Clubs, namely POG, Ian W, Garry S, Ron S and Flemmos.

We thank our ever supportive sponsor Dripping Wet who again came to the party wih competitor bags and prizes for the winners. Thanks also to Terumi from WA Surf International who donated those superb surfing essentials. Dee Why RSL is also recognized as an ongoing sponsor.

Remember that we now go into intra Club mode and we hold our comps on the last Sunday of every month, details of important dates to be faound elsewhere on this web site – Look forward to seeing you there!

PRESENTATION 2008
The team setup the Dee Why RSL in the afternoon in readiness for what was to be a most enjoyable night for our annual Presentation function. In attendance were competitors, family, friends and sponsors. The Club put on a magnificent spread of entrees and finger food – the venue and the service was outstanding.

Sean Dry kicked off the proceedings and we got through the trophy presentation, door prizes, raffle and auction. The raffle and the door prizes were won by visitors and the auction was again taken out by the ever alert Andrew Blanch. In all there were over thirty prizes up for grabs and most left with a memento to remember the night.

The important aspect was the determination of the years winners and again Sean Dry took out the Open and Club championship double. Lex just outpointed Simon Cox in the Masters, Tom Leach secured the Juniors whilst Phil Nicol scraped through to take the Legends.

All agreed that we had a fine year with great success in both the Logjam and the Five Ways. The summer Sunday Comps hosted over thirty surfers whilst the colder Winter saw numbers drop but we always had sixteen or so to brave the elements.

A big vote of thanks to our sponsors – Dripping Wet, Andrew and the staff, who stuck to us throughout the year, Phil from Sunshine Surf who kindly donated the Raffle board for the Presentation, Greg Bennett for his gifts throughout the year, Dee Why RSL for cash donation and subsidization of the final function and Solid Racks for their contribution in kind. We all appreciate your support and look forward to working with you in the New Year.

We are going to miss the normal comp on Sunday the 30th and substitute it with the Fun Day on the 14th of December. After the activities on the day we are going back to Phil’s place at North Curly for a BBQ and the AGM – All are welcome and we want to see you all there for this important day.
